Hunan University of Science and Technology: New progress in heterogeneous doping to enhance the performance of upconversion luminescent materials

Upconverting materials are a special class of nonlinear optical materials that convert long wavelengths into short wavelengths by absorbing two or more photons. Rare earth ion (Re3+) doped upconversion luminescent materials have significant advantages such as good light stability, sharp emission line and low biotoxicity, thus gradually replacing traditional organic fluorescent dyes and semiconductor quantum dots. However, the inherent low low up-conversion luminescence efficiency of such materials hinders their further application. Traditional synthetic methods include thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and solvothermal (hydrothermal). It is worth noting that compared with the first two classical synthesis methods, the solvothermal method has mild preparation conditions but the obtained product. The up-conversion luminescence intensity is much weaker. Although the particle size prepared by the method is larger than the above two, it is necessary to greatly improve the luminescence intensity of the up-converting nanocrystals prepared by the solvothermal method. Doping the appropriate Re3+ or non-Re3+ ions in the matrix of colloidal nanocrystals is an important strategy for regulating the size, shape, adjustment of electron and magnetic properties, and upconversion luminescence intensity of upconverting luminescent nanocrystals. For example, the team of Professor Liu Xiaogang from the National University of Singapore reported in the form of Letter on the top journal Nature that the size, crystal phase and upconversion luminescence intensity of NaYF4 upconversion luminescence nanoparticles were simultaneously changed by Gd3+ ion doping. In addition, some studies have shown that the doping of non-Re3+ ions (such as Ca2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Ti4+, etc.) into the crystal lattice can also significantly enhance the intensity of upconversion luminescence.

In this paper, the hexagonal phase Yb3+/Er3+:NaGdF4 nanocrystals co-doped with Sn4+ ions were prepared by solvothermal method. The product was analyzed by X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, inductively coupled plasma and fluorescence spectrometer. It was found that the up-conversion luminescence was the strongest when the Sn4+ doping concentration was 40%, and the sample was not doped with Sn4+ ions. In contrast, the upconversion luminescence intensity at 539 nm and 654 nm was increased by 21 times and 31 times, respectively, and the upconversion luminescence intensity prepared by the coprecipitation method was increased by 2.5 times. The reason for the enhancement is attributed to: Sn4+ doping promotes the growth of NaGdF4 nanocrystals, which greatly reduces the exposure of rare earth-activated ions to the surface quenching center; Sn4+ doping reduces the lattice symmetry of rare earth ions in NaGdF4 nanocrystals. It is advantageous to enhance up-conversion luminescence; Sn4+ doping replaces Gd3+ in the matrix lattice to further enrich the activation sites of rare earth ions in NaGdF4 nanocrystals, which is also beneficial to enhance up-conversion luminescence. In addition, the synthesis mechanism, luminescence lifetime and luminescence mechanism of upconversion nanocrystals are discussed in depth. This research has certain reference value for the preparation of high performance upconversion luminescent materials and its practical application.
